The Gardens – great for young families

One thing that Christchurch is renown for in New Zealand is it’s Gardens. Christchurch city has been nicknamed the Garden City, and for very good reason. Cantabrians take pride in their own gardens, but also the public Gardens. These Gardens are found close to Hagley park and is the destination of a lot of city folk in the weekend. There are many events to be found in the Garden’s and is a great place for young families.

The duck pond is an iconic spot in the Gardens where you’ll find young families playing in the paddling pools, on the adventure playground or feeding the ducks.

Bottle lake

Bottle Lake was a great place for mountain bike enthusiast to visit given they had kilometers of mountain biking track for the public to ride around free. They not only had a free track, but bikers where spoiled for choice. Another mountain biking track that is only about 15 minutes drive out from the CBD is Mc Cleans Island. This mountain biking track is also great for young families and has tracks going through a dense forest.

Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs is about an hour and a half out of Christchurch City. It is a very popular destination for cantabrians, simply because of it’s beautiful scenary, alpine outlook and of course thermal hot pools. The thermal hot pools is one of the main tourist attractions to Hanmer Springs, however, it is just one of them. Hanmer Springs is far enough for city slickers to enjoy the benefits of getting away for the weekend, but still close enough to be happy to make the trip away.

Akaroa

A seaside destination that is only an hour of of Christchurch City. This is another popular spot for Cantabrians. This small town is situated right by the seaside. You’ll find a lot of people from Christchurch visiting Akaroa to enjoy being close to the beach and enjoying the offerings in the small town. Given Akaroa is right by the sea, they are famous for the fish, and one of the more popular tourist attractions in Akaroa is their local Fish N Chips shop, which is world famous for having the best Fish N Chips.

Sumner

This beach was an extremely popular beach destination prior to the Christchurch earthquakes. It was a popular beach for families to visit in the weekends given it’s beautiful white sandy beaches and warm summer climates. However, the earthquakes hit Sumner in a big way, which transformed the once beautiful beach into what has been described as a container Island.

The Port Hills

Another famous spot in Christchurch. You can see the entire city from the top of the Port Hills. Christchurch can be such a beautiful view from the top of the Port Hills. There are a lot of walking tracks in the Port Hills, including Victoria Park. It is really a beautiful place to walk through in the summertime, because there is usually a lot of vegetation to walk through in the summertime that it act as a naturally canopy to walkers.

Rebuild Progress In Christchurch

There has been a lot progress that has gone on in Christchurch following the February disastrous earth Quakes. There were a lot of local businesses that disappeared after the earthquakes, some relocated while others were created as a result of the quakes.
